The Age of the Lamps
Eru Illuvatar, His name,
The great God of Elves and Men.
The One beyond all worlds who came,
Who is, Who Shall, Who has ever been.
Formed Middle-Earth in His love.
Breathed life into every created thing.
Sending the Ainur from above,
Through Ea, Life to All did bring.
The Vision of Illuvatar's embrace,
Was set against evil Melkor's claim.
Brought fourteen spirits of Ainur's race,
the Valar, the Powers of Arda came.
From the misty light that veiled the ground,
The Valar formed the fire of two great flame.
Illuin and Ormal together crowned,
These two great lamps that bear the name.
Two towers forged by Aule's hand,
Ringil and Helcar held the light.
On mounts of the Isle of Almaren,
The two lamps burned both day and night.
